Pigmentation Reduction

Pigmentation is caused by over-productive melanin resulting in dark spots and patches on the skin. Melanin is the cell which gives human skin, hair and even eyes their colour.

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation is caused by over-productive melanin resulting in dark spots and patches on the skin. Melanin is the cell which gives human skin, hair and even eyes their colour. Everyone has different levels of melanin in their skin - the more you have, the darker your skin tone. A number of environmental and genetic factors can influence the skin to produce irregular levels of melanin in certain areas. This can lead to slightly darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation) patches of skin. The causes of irregular skin pigmentation vary widely, and most people experience it on at least some part of their body (birthmarks, freckles). There are a number of causes of pigmentation. Sun exposure can also trigger a change in melanin levels.
